Frank Bungarten

has been proclaimed „OPUS KLASSIK 2018 INSTRUMENTALIST OF THE YEAR“.

The newly-established prize has been awarded Oct.14th at „Konzerthaus Berlin“ during a ceremonial tv presentation.

After already two previous „Echo-Klassik“ awards in the same prestigious category he once more establishes his position as Germany’s most recognized classical guitarist.

Being honored at an early age by legendary maestro Andrés Segovia unleashed the start of Bungarten’s international career. For almost four decades he has played countless concerts in more than 40 countries of the world and his painstakingly conceived recordings—dedicated to the heavyweights of the repertory—form the essence of his artistic life’s work. Bungarten’s Bach transcriptions, Sor studies, the „Cancion y Danza“ compilation and his complete Villa-Lobos are long-established, bestselling classics.

As a passionate professor of guitar he teaches an elite group of international students, formerly in Lucerne, Switzerland, and currently at the University of Music in Hannover and at various workshops and master classes worldwide.

WITH HIS LATEST PRODUCTION

Frank Bungarten breaks new ground in the history of guitar recordings.

For the first time—and after 150 years—the music of Johann Kaspar Mertz, the last of the great Viennese virtuosos, comes alive again on the spectacular original instrument.

THE TEN-STRING DOUBLE NECK GUITAR

epitomizes the pinnacle of a fascinating development during the Golden Age of guitar in Vienna in the first half of the 19th century. The dramatic expansion of tonal range and expression on the guitar, driven by the impact of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Liszt, is now finally documented true-to-life in a comprehensive high-end recording.

Guitars

GERHARD SCHNABL, “NO. 610”, SPRUCE / MAPLE, 1999

The guitar played on the Bach Partitas CD. Very old, light, extremely flamed woods. Firm, pure and transcendental tone.

GERHARD SCHNABL, “NO. 620”, SPRUCE / BRASILIAN TULIPWOOD, 2000

Wildest character of all Schnabl guitars. Spectacular wood, never repeated. Played on radio recordings with orchestra or the Villa-Lobos CD.

GERHARD SCHNABL, “NO. 646 & 700”, SPRUCE / BRASILIAN ROSEWOOD, 2003 & 2010

Two almost identical guitars. Toured the world, but no cracks or wood movements. Unlimited tonal possibilities. Listen to the Moreno-Torroba CD.

LUCIANO LOVADINA, SPRUCE / MAPLE, 2012

Italian beauty but also daily workhorse. Unsurpassed fat tone and endless sustain. The classical equivalent to a 1959 Gibson Les Paul.

Gary Southwell, “A-Series”, Spruce / Makassar ebony, 2012

Welcome overdose of “Stauffer” sound with contemporary touch. Woods stored since the 80s: Back and sides by Bernd Martin, top by Julian Bream.

Gary Southwell, “A-series”, YEW / 5000 years old bog oak, 2016

Only two extremely rare and phenomenal woods used. Very silky, sweet and flexible tone for a steel string. Overwhelms all senses.

Gary Southwell, “Scherzer 1861”, Spruce / Maple, 2013

Copy of Matanya Ophee’s original. Black basses, screaming trebles, in between transparent structure. Totally balanced over the whole range. To be heard on the Mertz CD.

Jan Tulacek, “Schenck 1847”, Spruce / Maple, 2016

Copy of the unique original from the Berlin museum. Insane handcraft of the young Czech luthier. Sounds amazing. Will be used for future projects.
